I finally found a vacuum that I ENJOY using; that works; that doesnt give me grief every time I use it. Check out my other reviews to see what Ive been through with all the other uprights Ive owned. Im so glad to switch to a bagged canister vac. I was so worried to spend this much money on a vac and then have issues with it like my others but this one was worth every penny so far. I bought the Miele Callisto at my local vacuum place - it was the least expensive model that was good with pet hair...I had it going on a year so far and I still LOVE it. I named her Rocket Dog. She follows me around the house like a loyal little companion. The motorized carpet head is great on carpets. The bare floor head is great on bare floors. The menuverablility is AWESOME...the way the head swivels around furniture legs and lamps and fits under things is just great. The adjustability in the length of the wand is easy and a pleasure (just push of a button). LOVE LOVE LOVE retractable cord!!! All parts are sturdy and solid...No clouds of dirt and dust in your face like you get when you empty a bagless. When you need to change the bag you just open, release bag, slide it out (theres even a thing that you can pull down on the bag to cover the hole so dirt doesnt puff out of it), and toss it away. But the BEST PART is when you put a new bag in...just slide it into the slot and slam the lid shut - DONE!! On all my previous bagged uprights it took like 10 min to wrestle with the collar of the bag to push it onto the hole - you know what Im talking about. This vacuum is heaven in that regard. Yes the bags are expensive BUT I have found that they hold a lot more dirt than you'd expect. Im approaching a year with this vac and I have just started on my 2nd box of bags. So that has not been as bad as I had thought. (those of you with bagless vacs, these bags hold a ton more dirt because they compact it all). So far this vac has been a PLEASURE. Thank you ROCKET DOG!!
I read all the reviews on Amazon and googled other web pages. I have been thinking about getting a new vac for 2+ years, waited because of the price. Bit the bullet and went to the local dealer store in the next town(Dublin Vacuum, Dublin, CA)for a test. I was planning to buy a lower priced model that did not have a power brush. Vacuumed the carpets there and liked the small powered head that came with the Callisto. Both heads work very well, power for carpets and parquet for hardwood floor. My other vacuum was a 20+ year old Hoover (hand me down) and I never had such nice clean carpets. I don't sneeze when I vacuum and the machine is easy to use. I hope the vacuum lasts a long time so I don't have to buy a new one.
i purchased my first miele 11 years ago after the salesman talked me out of spending [...] for a hoover. he said that miele construction was of much higher quality for 'only' another [...]. back then i still remember thinking 'wow, i can't believe i spent [...] for a VACUUM'. well, fast forward 11 years later, i no longer live in my tiny apartment but in a 5-bdrm house, and my miele vacuum is still going strong! i recently finished my basement, so i researched some upright vacuums to handle the carpeting down there. in the end i decided to use my old miele for that area and bought this one for the rest of the house. it's much more advanced than my old model (mine didn't have a hepa filter), but i fully expect at least another 10 years from this canister. i'm sold on miele for life!!
I've only had my Callisto with the SEB236 power brush for a week. I had bought a used Kirby Ultimate G off of eBay just a month ago. I had always wanted a Kirby. Then, I discovered Miele thanks to killdirt.com. I bought mine from an allergy website, tax free and free shipping!
Maneuvering this vacuum is easy as far as canisters go. I have no problem cleaning my stairs with it. I also am able to clean my stairs with the SEB236, then go around the edges with the crevice tool.
Changing tools is a snap. Suction is phenomenal, so is the sound at full power. It isn't nearly as loud as other vacs. I also have a Dyson Animal. I don't want another bagless vacuum. The Dyson only has suction on one side. I also can't stand the ratchet sound the Dyson makes on rugs!
I love the hard floor brush. I have hardwood and ceramic tile. Even the wheels on the canister seem harmless on my hardwood floor.
I wanted a vacuum that was true HEPA, meaning sealed so that all exhaust exits via the HEPA filter. If you're vacuuming, why should ANY dust be blown back into the air to settle on your furniture, back into the carpet, and into your lungs?
I bought the Callisto because I didn't need the more expensive models with the electronic suction control on the hose and the indicator to tell me when to change the HEPA filter. I can make a note of that. The Callisto is all you need if you want a Miele vacuum with a power nozzle.
The SEB 236 nozzle has very cool lighting. It also has 5 levels of height adjustment. Excellent vacuum!
I was feeling sick being at my home and tried many vacuums but they usually didn't lasted very long and constantly needed belt replacements or other repairs. Besides you had to vacuum vacuum itself all the time. Besides all current vacuum cleaners took very wrong direction- almost all of them are bagless these days. I would never purchase bagless vacuum in my life. First of all it is better to dump a bag and put another one. Second all these dust particles will not end up at your home again after you dumped all dirt from bagless vacuum collection tray. I also like canister vacuums. They are very popular in Europe. Upright ones might save some space but they vacuum worse.
After I unpacked my Miele Callisto I was surprised that all labels stated that it is made in Germany. That is quality people! Everything is made in China these days and quality for most part suffers. This vacuum is made like a tank. It will last you a lifetime. Everything is outstanding quality.
Now about vacuuming part. After first try I noticed that something happened - air in a room was incredible! I stopped sneezing and coughing. Vacuum is sealed and it has HEPA filter. HEPA filter catches 100% dust. Check out youtube videos. It is the only vacuum (at least made for household use) who has true HEPA filter. Everyone else is just imposing that.
Now about minuses. Fist of all is price. More than $[...] is probably one of the most expensive vacuums on a market. However you have to divide this price to the expected years of use. I think this vacuum will last you at least 10 years. Still it is not easy decision to spend so much money. Second thing I dislike is how heavy is stick which connect vacuum hose and vacuuming head. It is made of I think aluminum and has power cord inside so that is the reason why it is so heavy. But it will withstand some abuse and regular use too. Third thing is that while it is quiet it is still quite loud- most of the noise comes from power head (if you turn it on) than vacuum itself. Fourth thing I dislike is confusing marketing. For example what is the difference between series 5 (Callisto and others) vs series 4? And what is the difference among Callisto and other models of series 5? It seems that colors and a few minor things are the main difference. Also electric or air powered nozzles. In my opinion air powered nozzles are more than sufficient. I think I should have purchased either Miele Pisces (series 5) or series 4 Antares instead. That is the difference of >200-300 dollars. I bought it from miele.com, they have 30 days return policy. I think I will exchange it. In any case Miele is the best.
Just do your lungs a favor and buy Miele vacuum. It leaves any dysons or other Chinese assembled vacuums in a dust. Beware that heavy marketing is not equal to the true performance. I am very surprised that I started to like vacuuming!
Bought this Miele S5280 Callisto Galaxy Vacuum and it is incredible. It has all the German engineering you would expect and performance exceeds all expectations.
Unlike many of the other vacuums on the market which are made of cheap plastic and designed to last only a couple of years, this vacuum is very well engineered and put together. They use much better polymers in their parts and the whole thing is clearly well built. It's more expensive than others but worth every penny. I actually like vacuuming now! It's sooooo quiet compared to others I've heard and the sound it does make is much more pleasing that the high pitched noise usually heard. What an improvement from the $500 Electrolux we used to have. I can actually hear the stereo playing now when I work.
One of the best features of this vac is the head for hard floors. It has a ball joint on it that allows you to control the head as if it were your own hand at the end of the wand. You've really got to try it to believe it. Before you shell out money for any other vac, you've got to make it to a dealer and give it a try. I walked into the dealer thinking I wanted a Riccar or a Sebo or a Dyson, or maybe one of the better Hoovers, but was totally convinced after just 5 minutes with the Miele.
I negociated with a local dealer and was able to get the larger carpet head instead of the smaller one that usually comes with this model for the same price ($800). Some people may prefer the smaller head to get into smaller spaces, but I liked the bigger one as it's more substancial and covers more area in one pass.
Either way, you will ***LOVE*** this machine.
Ok, I know - it's just a vacuum, but if you're like me and have gone through 4 or 5 other vacuums and have always been disappointed - I guarantee you: the Miele will not let you down. You can see online demonstrations of it's sealed canister system at YouTube, which for allergy sufferers or others concerned about vacuums that just recirculate the dirt, is of utmost importance. But beyond that, this is just one beautiful little machine. If you've shelled out hundreds for a Dyson only to be disappointed by it's flimsy plastic construction, you will be impressed by the Miele. Every piece is solid - especially the wand which is so sturdy and well crafted it feels more like a precision built part for a fighter jet than a part for a vacuum. The only downside to this sturdy construction is that it does make the wand a bit heavy, but I will take that over flimsy construction any day. I have had vacuums so loud you couldn't hear the phone ring if it was right next to you - this one is so amazingly quiet you'll think that it can't possibly have good suction, but it does! Quiet, powerful, with a sealed container, true HEPA filtration and a cloth bag (not paper) which self seals when you remove it from the canister as well as unbelievable construction make this vacuum worth every penny!
This vacuum has been great so far. It is very quiet and although I did not consider noise level to be important, I wish that I had a Miele when my children were small (napping). I use this along with a Roomba and my floors have never been cleaner. DO NOT BUY AN ELECTROLUX. I have always owned them but they sold their name to another company. Sadly, I own two newer ones. They are junk now and will be going into the trash. I cannot speak to the longevity of the Miele, but I can tell you it is very well made and it is the best vacuum for hardwood floors I have ever used. I did not get the "turbo" brush so I do have to push a little harder when cleaning rugs, but it is gooD exercise!
This economy level Miele model, as all the same cleaning ability as the more expensive models, Aquarius, and Capricorn, just without the electronic controls. The machine comes packaged with their mid-size power nozzle, the 217-3. This nozzle is great for medium-low pile carpets, and cleaning bare floors. This nozzle is so versitale you won't have to switch cleaning head going from your rugs to your bare floor, just simply flip the switch on the hose. The only surface this nozzle struggles on is the thicker carpets. You will feel like you have just worked out in the gym for 30 minutes, if you have to vacuum thick carpet with this nozzle. If you have thick carpets, or substantial pet hair, you'll want to move into a machine that comes with the larger 236 power nozzle. We have sold Miele's for long time, and we don't hesitate to put our name behind them. The best canister money can buy! Expect 25+ years of use out of this vacuum.
