I spent a lot of time debating the type of heater for a three car garage - well insulated, with 9' ceiling. In Oklahoma it does some times get pretty cold. However, when it is in the 20s outside my garage is warm and comfortable. The thermostat is great. I have the heater waving a wall so it never is blowing on me. I found it easy to install if your comfortable putting in 2 - 30 amp breakers and fishing some wire.
Actually, I did really well buying this and thanks to all the people who wrote reviews that helped me decide.

Great quiet heater. It's heating my 36x30 3 stall garage with 9ft ceilings. 32 degrees outside and the heater took it up to 60 in an hour.

Customer Buzz
Product was very surprising on how quiet it is and small for the level of heating provided.

I do not typically write reviews for products, but I have to tell you that this heater is great. I live in So California and it does not get really cold here compared to most other states. However, I refinish wood doors and the surrounding temperature has to be above 65 degrees for the application of varnish to come out right. This heater heats up my 800 square foot garage to a toasty 75 degrees from a chilly 50 degrees in about an hour. Would recommended it to anyone that needs a nice electric heater.

Be careful that before you buy this unit, you have an extra 25 or 30amp circuit breaker slot in your electrical box.

This item arrived with adequate instructions and I had already had the electrical work plumbed in for 240 V, so the installation was a breeze. This was installed in my basement, so that I can work in my woodshop during the winter months. The heat output is excellent. I'm not sure of what the monthly increase in electric costs will be, but the ability to use the basement is a plus anyway. You can adjust the direction of heat flow, heat output and the built-in thermostat allows for shutoff when the desired temperature is obtained and turns on again when needed. Good item for the price.

This heater is made by the same company that makes the Farenheat model of this same product. For about $30-40 savings you can pick up that model.

Overall a great product. I am located in central North Dakota and have this heater in my 3 stall garage. I have the thermostat set to a notch below the low setting and it keeps it at a comfortable 45F. Expect a hike in the electric bill, but its to be expected.

Dayton G73 Electric Garage Heater

Step 1: I wanted to work comfortably in a 22 x 22 (9 foot ceiling) garage in the winter. Figuring I'd need lots of heat, I bought a portable 40,000 btu propane heater. It exhausts lots of carbon monoxide, so you have to partially open a door or window to the outside to let [cold] fresh air in -- which seriously lowers heater efficiency. The heater warmed the garage, but the approach wasn't satisfactory -- i.e., the fumes were so bad, I stopped using it. It was also very loud, like the hissing of escaping air from a large air boat; plus, when the propane tank ran out, the heater stopped; each time you needed heat, you had to drag it out, connect it to the tank, leave plenty of floor space around this self-contained-blowtorch; put it all away when you were done; and of course find a place to store it. Also, there was no thermostat. All in all, a royal pain in the keister.

Step 2: I bought one of these electric heaters. It has only half the btu's of the propane unit, but there is no need to open a window or door for ventilation. It also has a thermostat, so you can set it (to a number, not a temperature), and come back 30 minutes later and be in relative comfort. On days in the low 30s, it will keep the garage in the 60s, which is fine for working.. (My attached garage ceiling and 2 walls are insulated.) My heater is mounted high up on a wall, but it can also be mounted to hang from the ceiling, as long as the clearances laid out in the instructions, are followed. In any case, once mounted, it is out of the way, and always ready. There's nothing to haul out or set up when you need heat -- just turn it on. When done, just turn it off. This heater needs a dedicated 30-amp 220-volt circuit. You wouldn't want to use this every day, due to electricity costs, but for occasional use, it is perfect.

My advice is to skip step 1.

Note: The model name/number given this product by the manufacturer is "Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount Automatic 5000 Watt Electric Heater, Model# FUH5-4". It's manufactured by Marley Engineered Products of Bennettsville, South Carolina. It's sold here by Dayton under their name and model number: "G73 Electric Garage Heater". So, this review covers either model heater, since they are effectivly, the same unit.

Customer Buzz
I haven't seen the electric bill yet so I'm giving this heater 5 stars. I had previously bought one of the propane Reddy Heaters (RLP50VA see my review on that) to heat my garage but that heater was completely unsuitable for that task. This one is perfect, it heats up the garage quickly and is quiet and clean. It is a 240v heater and requires a hardwired installation so is a little bit of a pain but I wired everything up and had an electrician friend come check out my work before I turned it on and all was OK. Needed a 30A dual pole circuit breaker and 10/2 wire along with a junction box and flexible connecting cable but it was worth the effort! My garage is a garage under (standard Colonial) 26x22 so the ceiling is insulated but nothing else is. Living in NH, a heated garage for working on the cars is pretty much a necessity and I would recommend this heater highly.
